Erin Cone
denouement
[ may 27th - june 12th, 2011 ]
Erin Cone's paintings are commanding, enigmatic mirrors of the human condition; they evoke the perspective and emotional complexity of the model's interior state. Detached, yet imbued with raw emotion, Cone places her subject in abstract settings devoid of reference to the material world. Cone's bold, minimal compositions encapsulate potent moments and solidify them in an infinite manner.
Cone's latest series of paintings explores denouement – the final resolution of the intricacies of a narrative: the outcome of a doubtful series of occurrences. These works capture a sense of plot resolving, but we are left unaware of the story, seeing only the sweeping exits of dramas untold. The mystery inherent in the process of painting is itself a complex sequence of events that is mirrored in the painted subjects. The ending of the stories is near at hand, but not revealed, their outcome inviting the viewer's participation.
Erin Cone has been featured on the cover of American Art Collector and she has been chosen in Santa Fean Magazine as one of "Five Artists to Watch" and in Southwest Art's "21 under 31" showcasing top emerging artists. Her artwork was recently added to the permanent collection of the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs.
