(SANTA FE, NM) — Nüart Gallery is pleased to present “Renascent,” a solo exhibition of new work by Erin Cone, running from October 18th through November 9th, 2024, with an opening reception on Friday, October 18th, from 5:00 - 7:00 pm.
Erin Cone’s paintings trace the contours of thought and emotion, rendering the human figure as both an anchor and a departure point. Her work strips the world down to its essentials, where the figure is a solitary note in a larger, silent score. Each canvas is a quiet unfolding, where form is not a static presence but a suggestion that lingers on the edge of articulation.
Cone’s figures exist as solitary moments of introspection. Her approach emphasizes a stillness that feels alive, capturing gestures that seem to hold their breath. In this new body of work, patterns of flowers float across her compositions like echoes of forgotten conversations, like shadows cast by unseen light. These elements suggest a dialogue between the seen and the unseen, a dance of shapes that invites the viewer to pause, to look again, and to wonder.
The works are marked by their restraint, their attention to the subtle orchestration of line and color. Cone avoids the obvious, opting instead for the quietly profound. Her figures stand as testaments to the mystery of human experience, not fixed in time but existing in a state of quiet contemplation. The floral motifs interspersed throughout her paintings feel less like decorations and more like clues—hints at a connection that is sensed rather than seen, felt rather than explained.
Renascent invites us into a realm where the familiar becomes enigmatic, and the simplest gestures are charged with significance. Cone’s paintings engage not with the narratives we tell ourselves, but with the sensations that linger just beneath them.
