(SANTA FE, NM) Nüart Gallery is pleased to present Jardín de Invierno, a solo exhibition of new work by celebrated Spanish painter Alberto Gálvez. Running from November 22 through December 14, 2024, the exhibition opens with a reception on Friday, November 22, from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m.
Alberto Gálvez’s latest series delves into the silent resonance of imagined faces framed by botanical motifs. His portraits, meticulously layered with oil glazes, emerge with a contemplative stillness, inviting viewers to reflect on themes of nature and identity. Inspired by Renaissance portraiture and the naturalist traditions of 17th and 18th century botanical art, Gálvez’s approach combines classical influences with a distinctively contemporary perspective.
In Jardín de Invierno, Gálvez contemplates the passage of time and the unseen presence of nature, threading symbolic references to Spain’s native flora throughout the series. His layering process—drawing and applying oil glazes—reveals intricate details that highlight the contrast between growth and preservation, calling attention to nature’s fragility within the broader cultural dialogue.
Philosophical influences, such as Byung-Chul Han’s reflections on contemplation and stillness, add meditative depth to the work, while inspiration from the music of Baroque composers like Handel further enriches his subdued yet vibrant palette. The exhibition’s compositions embody an ongoing inquiry into existence, bridging the historical and the contemporary in a harmonious visual language.
