Erin Cone is known for her visually impactful work that unites figuration with subtle minimalism and abstraction. Orchestrating stark, abstract arenas where figures, imbued with immense affective depth, capture both motion and emotion, her static yet supple figures hesitate on the expectant verge of dichotomy: motion and stasis, emotional complexity and introspection, truth and belief.
In this solo exhibition, “Stages of Believing,” Cone examines perception--its fickle selectivity, its vague discernment of the separations between understanding and reality, and the unyielding nature of belief. Cone, in her own words, “examines the divide between what is seen and what is believed, using static images to explore the shifting nature of perception– how we see, how we edit and how we distill our perceptions into memory.” Her work follows in the tradition of understanding the nature of representation, translating objective truth into a universal language of line, form and color to present her own refined, subjective vision.
Erin Cone's portraits are commanding, enigmatic mirrors of the human condition. A fusion of traditional portraiture and magical realism, Cone's paintings evoke the perspective and emotional complexity of the sitter's interior world. Since her first show in 2001, Cone has had twenty-two solo shows and participated in more than a dozen group shows across the U.S. and in Europe, consistently enjoying critical and commercial success for her unconventional approach to figurative realism.
